Key grammar when and while

We use Past Continuous Tense for an action that was happening at a definite time in the past, e.g. Last Saturday afternoon Martin was watching the match on TV. What were you doing on Saturday afternoon?

We often use the Past Continuous Tense and the Past Simple Tense in the same sentence. We use the situation Past Continuous for the background activity or situation and the Past Simple for the shorter action, e.g. I was having a shower when the telephone rang.

Warm up.

Ask students to look at the picture and to predict what happened. Ask students to read the questions and the beginning of the story to check their predictions. Ask for some ideas what happened next. Don’t give answers at this point.

Exercise 6a. Look at this sentence from the story. Underline the Past continuous verb and circle the Past simple verb.

As they were getting near the Earth


                                    Four of the spaceships caught fire

Rule. Use the Past simple for a background action or description.

Use the Past Continuous for an action that happened at one particular moment.
